June is Gay Pride Month, and there’s no better way to celebrate than by exploring the rich history of the LGBTQ+ community. History Fort Lauderdale and Galleria Fort Lauderdale have teamed up to present an enlightening exhibit titled “Take PRIDE! A 100-Year Retrospective of LGBTQ+ Milestones.” This must-see exhibit runs throughout June at Galleria Fort Lauderdale and offers a deep dive into the significant moments that have shaped South Florida’s arts, culture, business, media, and political landscapes.
What to Expect
“Take PRIDE!” highlights pivotal moments in LGBTQ+ history, including:
- Executive Order 10450 (1953): Banned homosexuals from working for the federal government.
- The Stonewall Riots (1969): A turning point in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights.
- Harvey Milk’s Election (1978): The first openly gay man elected to office, and
- Legalization of Same-Sex Marriage (2015): A landmark victory for love and equality.
Additionally, the exhibit features the Miss Florida F.I. Pageant Wall of Fame, celebrating 53 years of female impersonation art, with pageant titleholders from 1972 to the present.
